DDORNT: Department for Building Technologies and Structures
Head of department
Balan Oleg Volodymyrovych
Oleg Balan graduated from Kyiv Engineering and Construction Institute with specialization in Industrial and Civil Engineering. He works at the Institute since 2004.
He is an expert in the field of designing and organizing construction production and technology for the execution of construction and installation works at nuclear and thermal energy facilities. Prior to 2004, he worked in the Ukrainian Design and Development Institute Atomenergobudproject, where he was involved to the design development of building and assembly technologies for the construction of major buildings and auxiliary structures of units № 1, 2 and 3 of Khmelnytska NPP, №4 of Rivne NPP and power unit №3 Kyiv HEC.
He is a participant of the liquidation of the Chornobyl accident consequences.
Main directions of the department activities:
- development and justification of safe technologies for construction, assembly and dismantling works at the Shelter object and other radiation hazardous objects;
- assessment and prediction of technical condition of building structures of the Shelter object and other radiation hazardous objects;
- 3D modelling and visualization of the projected activities at objects with radiation and nuclear technologies;
- radiohydrogeological monitoring at the Chornobyl NPP site and in the exclusion zone.
Main achievements:
Assessments of the technical condition of building structures, technological equipment and engineering systems of the Shelter object and the 3rd Unit of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant at the places of performing of construction and installation works for stabilization of the Shelter object structures, the construction of a new ventilation stack and the construction of a fencing contour of NSC were carried out.
The assessment of the technical state of building structures for other objects located in the exclusion zone, in particular: modules of the Pidlisnyy radioactive waste disposal site, and the antenna structures of the Chornobyl-2 facility, have been made.
3D modelling and visualization of the dismantling of unstable structures of the Shelter object is performed.
Complex of works on radiohydroecological monitoring is carried out, including:
- monitoring of the engineering and hydrogeological conditions of the Chornobyl NPP and NSC buildings in terms of changes in the depth of occurrence, groundwater velocity under the influence of various factors;
- monitoring of unregulated receipts of radioactive contaminated waters from the Shelter object and other sources into the environment;
- monitoring of hydrochemical and radiation conditions in soils and underground waters;
- scientific and technical support of works performed by SSE ChNPP divisions as part of the development of projects for improving monitoring research, maintenance of drilling works for the establishment of observation wells;
- preparation of prognosis of changes in radiohydrogeological conditions during operation of the NSC and other buildings and structures of the Chornobyl NPP.
