Second International Conference “Liquid Radioactive Waste Treatment: Ukrainian Context”

On June 29, 2023, the Second International Conference «Liquid Radioactive Waste Treatment: Ukrainian context» was held in Slavutych city.

     The Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants of the NAS of Ukraine was among the coorganizers of the Conference with UE “Regional Development Agency” of Slavutych city council and ALPHA ATOM LLC with partners.

     In addition to our Institute and the organizers, the Сonference was attended by representatives of such organizations as: SSE Chornobyl NPP, State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, NTUU “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”, Trade Union “Innovative Nuclear Hub of Slavutych”, PO “Ukrainian Nuclear Society” (UkrNS), Institute of Environmental Radioactivity of Fukushima University (Japan), SE NNEGC “ENERGOATOM” and SE “Scientific and Technical Center” of SE “NNEGC “ENERGOATOM”, State Agency on Exclusion Zone Management (SUEZM), SSE “Central Enterprise for Radioactive Waste Management” (CERWM), SSE “ECOCENTER” “, SI “The Institute of Environmental Geochemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine”, EU Project “Management of Radioactive Waste Before Disposal” – PREDIS, Professional Association of Environmentalists of Ukraine, Lviv Polytechnic National University, All-Ukrainian Innovation Ecosystem “Sikorsky Challenge Ukraine”, Institute of Water Problems and Land Reclamation of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine, “WES.eco” (Israel), National Aviation University.

      The Conference was held in a hybrid format: participants had the opportunity to speak both offline at the conference hall and online on the Zoom conference platform. A total of 12 reports were given by scientists and practitioners with relevant experience. In total, 90 people joined the conference. The moderators were: Ihor Peer, Director of Alfa ATOM LLC, Maksym Saveliev, Senior Researcher of the ISP NPP of the NAS of Ukraine, and Aryna Starovoitova, Director of the Regional Development Agency of the Slavutych City Council.

     During the day, all participants discussed the issues of challenges and sustainability in the radioactive waste (RAW) management in post-war reconstruction; innovative engineering and research in the field of liquid RAW processing; safety measures and best practices for processing liquid RAW. During the discussion, the experience of Ukrainian scientists was exchanged with relevant specialists from other countries, which is certainly important for the development of science around the world.

    During the Conference, the following speakers made welcome addresses:

• Oleksandr Balashevskyi, Head of the Scientific and Technical Center of the SE “NNEGC “Energoatom”;
• Danylo Lavrenov, Executive Secretaty of the “UkrNS”;
• Yurii Zabulonov, Director of the SI “The Institute of Environmental Geochemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine”;
• Mark Zhelezniak, Professor of the Institute of Environmental Radioactivity of Fukushima University;
• Oleh Nasvit. Advisor of the SUEZM.

    During the event, the planned results were achieved, namely: there was a global dialogue of the world scientific community regarding the liquid RAW management, as well as a discussion of current problems related to their processing, in order to support a safe and sustainable future for Ukraine and the European Union.
