SE NNEGC “Energoatom” Workshop on Realization of the Project of Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility
Representatives of the Institute for Safety Problems of NPP of NAS of Ukraine participated in the workshop organized by SE NNEGC “Energoatom” within the framework of the project of the Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility construction on May 27-29, 2019. Main issues discussed by the range of specialists were related to the state of the project realization, analysis of behavior of materials shell of spent nuclear fuel under condition of dry storage and discussion of issue of scientific and technical support of works at the stage of construction and commissioning of Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility.
During the workshop V. I. Kholosha, Deputy Director General of BO “Atomproektinzhiniring” of SE NNEGC “Energoatom”, made a report on the state of the project realization of Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility construction and amount of performed works according to the approved schedule.
Representatives of Argonne National Laboratory of the US Department of Energy and representative of the US Atomic Energy Commission participated in the workshop. Representatives of Argonne National Laboratory reported on work of research facilities for studying spent nuclear fuel, researches on behavior of shell of fuel during long-term storage.
Ricardo Torres, representative of the US Atomic Energy Commission, made a range of reports on issues of licensing of multi-purpose container Holtec by regulatory authorities of the USA, substantiation of issues on aging of container materials during long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel and necessity to control these processes. He also paid special attention to the issue of regulatory control of facilities for dry storage of spent nuclear fuel in the USA.
V.M. Rudko, Head of the Division for Design of Objects with Radiation and Nuclear Technologies, made a report on types and amount of works, which are planned to be done by scientists within the framework of the Program on scientific and technical support at the stage of construction and commissioning of Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility. The main activity of the ISP NPP within the Program is to substantiate the reliability of constructions of Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility, development of recipes of special concrete for filling containers HI-STORM and to provide radiation protection of the personnel and the environment during building and commissioning Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility.
