Workshop in slavutych

     On June 2-3, 2023, the workshop “Digital twins in the life cycle of nuclear power energy facilities”. From the creation of nuclear power plants to operation and decommissioning” was held in Slavutych city on the sidelines of the INUDECO International Conference.

      The organizer of the workshop was the Institute for Safety Problems of NPP of the NAS of Ukraine, Slavutych City Council and Municipal Enterprise “Regional Development Agency” together with SE NNEGC “Energoatom”, in partnership with the Joint Project Support Office of the European Commission (JSO), Plejades GmbH (Germany), the University of Bristol (United Kingdom), the University of Berkeley (USA), SSE “ChNPP”, the State Agency for the Management of the Exclusion Zone, the National Technical University of Ukraine “Ihor Sikorskyi Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”, the Ukrainian Nuclear Society and the Institute of Problems of Mathematical Machines and Systems of the NAS of Ukraine.

      The participants of the workshop were managers and specialists of specialized departments of NPPs, the State Agency for the Management of the Exclusion Zone, SE NNEGC “Energoatom”, scientists of the NAS of Ukraine, representatives of associations and organizations, nuclear industry institutions (60 people in total).

    The event was moderated by Maksym Saveliev, a senior researcher at the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants of the NAS of Ukraine, and Aryna Starovoitova, director of the Municipal Enterprise “Regional Development Agency” of the Slavutych City Council.

    The first working day of the workshop was opened by the Mayor of Slavutych, Yurii Fomichev, who presented in his speech the concept of creating a nuclear science and technology cluster in Slavutych as unique for the Northern region of Ukraine. In particular, he emphasized that the proposed project will contribute to the further transformation of a mono-profile city into a city of scientific technologies in the field of atomic energy, support of cooperation between science, education and business in the region.

     Maksym Saveliev, a senior researcher at the ISP NPP, and Norber Molitor, a representative of Plejades GmbH, talked about the role and place of digital twins in the life cycle of the NPP.

      Maksym Shevchuk, deputy head of the v, spoke about the digital transformation of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone and the current state of affairs in the Exclusion Zone in connection with military aggression.

       One of the key ones was the speech of Dmytro Stelmakh, head of the strategic planning department of the SSE “ChNPP”, and Fedor Lanskikh, the leading specialist of the strategic planning department of the SSE “ChNPP”, regarding the practical significance of the current information model of the Chornobyl NPP in combination with the decommissioning support information system.

      Ihor Skiter, a senior researcher at the ISP NPP, spoke about three-dimensional modeling as a tool for improving safety culture during the dismantling of unstable structures at the Shelter object.

      The discussion was continued by the speech of Olena Pareniuk, a senior research associate of the ISP NPP, regarding the possibilities of Unreal Engine for building a digital twin of the Chornobyl NPP.

       Speeches of foreign participants were also made. In particular, a talk by Peter Martin from the University of Bristol on advanced robotics and unmanned aerial vehicle technology in digital twins; a speech by Tom Scott from Bristol GNSP on the ATLAS and TITAN projects aimed at overcoming radiological threats in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone and Zaporizhzhia NPP, as well as a presentation by Kai Vetter and Jake Heckle from the University of Berkeley on 3D mapping of radiologically contaminated areas.
