Visit of the President of the NAS of Ukraine, Academician Anatoly Zahorodny to the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants in the city of Chornobyl
On May 24, 2023, the President of the NAS of Ukraine, Academician Anatoly Zagorodny, and the Vice-President of the NAS of Ukraine, Academician Vyacheslav Bogdanov, visited the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants (hereinafter referred to as ISP NPP) of the NAS of Ukraine in the city of Chornobyl and the State Specialized Enterprise (hereinafter referred to as SSE) “Chornobyl NPP”. The distinguished guests from the Institute were accompanied by the Director of the ISP NPP of the NAS of Ukraine, Academician Anatolii Nosovskyi and the Deputy Director on General Issues, Yevheniya Kudin.
The heads of the NAS of Ukraine got acquainted with the work of the ISP NPP of the NAS of Ukraine, inspected the administrative and laboratory premises of the Institute, and saw firsthand the consequences of Russian aggression during the occupation of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone.
The President of the NAS of Ukraine, Academician Anatoly Zagorodny, welcomed the employees of the ISP NPP, emphasized the importance and relevance of the tasks they perform, as they are primarily related to the Shelter object transformation into an ecologically safe system, scientific and technical support at the stages of construction and commissioning of the spent nuclear fuel storage facilities, the safety and efficiency of NPP operation, as well as the development of modern diagnostic systems for important parameters of NPP power units during operation in over-design terms. Solving such tasks makes it possible to increase the level of energy independence of the state due to the development of nuclear energy, as well as to ensure the efficient and reliable operation of facilities that use nuclear technologies.
The Head of the Division for Nuclear and Radiation Safety Viktor Krasnov familiarized the visitors of the Institute with the results of the scientific and technical support of the work on the Chornobyl NPP power units decommissioning and the Shelter object transformation into an ecologically safe system. The visitors heard information about the scientific and technical support of the work on the New Safe Confinement of the Shelter object, during which a set of studies on the scientific substantiation of nuclear and radiation safety was carried out, which allowed the Chornobyl NPP to put the New Safe Confinement into industrial operation, as well as to ensure sufficient level of environmental safety and preparation for works on the Shelter object transformation into an ecologically safe system.
Acting Deputy Director on Research Valerii Derengovskyi, introduced the visitors to the results of the scientific and technical support of the works at the stages of construction and commissioning of the Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility of Water-Water Power Reactors, performed by specialists of the Institute for SE NNEGC “Energoatom”, the implementation of which makes it possible to strengthen energy independence of Ukraine due to the refusal of the Russian Federation’s services for the storage of spent fuel. It was noted about the development of a recipe for special radiation-protective concrete for the manufacture of HI-STORM containers of the Centralized Storage using domestic materials, the development of technological regulations for the production of concrete and filling of HI-STORM containers, the program of acceptance tests of the concrete of these containers, as well as the Regulations for radiation control at the stage of the Centralized storage commissioning.
In the administrative and industrial complex of the SSE “Chornobyl NPP”, a meeting was held with the Head of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, Yevhen Kramarenko, acting General Director of the SSE “Chornobyl NPP” Valerii Seida, and Mayor of Slavutych Yurii Fomichev. The guests visited the control panels of the 3rd and 4th power units of the Chornobyl power plant, the central hall of the 3rd unit of the station, as well as the under-arch space of the New Safe Confinement.
At the end of the visit, the delegation moved to the city of Prypiat, where the workers of the Chornobyl NPP lived before the accident and which was evacuated after the accident.
The President of the NAS of Ukraine, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, Anatoly Zahorodny, highly praised the results of the employees and the scientific activity of the Institute as a whole, noted the importance of the institution in solving the urgent and strategically important scientific and technical tasks of nuclear energy during the war and in post-war periods, and also emphasized that “under the conditions post-war recovery of Ukraine, nuclear energy can be a reliable foundation of energy independence”. In addition, he expressed that he was “deeply impressed by the extremely complex amount of work of scientists, designers, engineers, builders and the international community, which was implemented to build a unique technological structure – the New Safe Confinement.”
