A round table “Risks and current trends of global nuclear safety”
On April 6, at the NTUU “KPI” a round table “Risks and current trends of global nuclear safety” was conduct.
In its meetings the following were participated: Deputy Administrator for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation, National Nuclear Security Administration, US Department of Energy (NNSA) Anne Harrington; NNSA Director of Strategic Planning/Integration, US Department of Energy, Andrew A. Hood; NNSA Assistant Deputy Administrator for Material Management and Minimization Peter Hanlon; a representative of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, USA, Donald Lehman; Rector of NTUU KPI, member of the NASU, Mikhailo Zgurovsky, Director of Institute for Safety Problems NPP NASU, corresponding member of NASU Anatoly Nosovsky, stuff of the George Kuzmycz Training Center at the Institute of Nuclear Researches NASU, Ukrainian Scientific and Technical Center, ministries and agencies that cooperate with KPI in matters of educational platform developing in Ukraine in the domain of nuclear security as well as the scientists, postgraduate students and students of heat and power engineering faculty of the University.
First planar session of round table was devoted to global issues of nuclear security.
“In 1986, Ukraine experienced the deadliest nuclear disaster. And despite the fact, that the country had rather high level of technical competency it was insufficient to cope with the disaster. The same can be related to the tragedy at Fukushima. Our countries that possess considerable experience and profound knowledge in nuclear power engineering should feel sense of responsibility for spreading such knowledge through those countries which just only attract to this sphere”, – noted Ann Harrington in her speech.
Issue of nuclear security culture at the objects of nuclear power engineering was emphasized throughout the most speeches of that panel. However, regardless any situation the problem of security remains crucial for nuclear power engineering, thus, as Donald Lehman noted, that we have to learn to implement the general rules for field safety arrangement, coordinating them with real circumstances. A vivid example of this statement was the report of Anatoly Nosovskiy about activities at the Institute for Safety Problems of NPP of NASU, which he heads. His speech related not only to various aspects of nuclear power plants’ operation but issues of waste nuclear fuel storage and disposal, as well. Besides, the solving of such urgent problem as diversification of nuclear fuel supply for NPP that permits to deliver from dependence on Russia in such matter.
Meeting participants also discussed the issues of quantitative and qualitative assessment of impacts on the physical state of nuclear safety, using the experience of Ukraine in issues of measures arrangement to ensure nuclear safety etc.
“In the course of the round table, I assured myself that Ukraine due to its dramatic nuclear history should become one of the leading co-players in a field of nuclear accidents’ prevention, alongside with USA, Japan and other nuclear countries, – noted Mykhailo Zgurovsky, summing up the results of the meeting. – And our University together with our fellow workers from different Ukrainian districts are doing their best to create the national system of new knowledge generation in the field of nuclear security…”.
