Participation in the lecture “Scientific meetings”
In order to popularize scientific knowledge and scientific activities among young people, scientists of the Institute for Safety Problems of NPP gave lectures within the project “Scientific Meetings”. This project was initiated and implemented by young scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. On April 30, 2021, an online meeting was held with young people on the “Chornobyl zone and the Shelter object. Current state and future”. The meeting was held on the occurrence of the 35th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident.
Two lectures were held, one of which was given by Serhii Paskevich, Deputy Director of Research of the Institute for Safety Problems of NPP, who presented information about the Shelter object. The lecture considered the history of the Sarcophagus from the moment of construction to the present state and showed the necessity to implement projects to convert the “Shelter” to an environmentally safe system. The history of the creation and construction of new safe confinement and its role in future activities were also shown. Particular attention was paid to research conducted at the Shelter from the time of the accident to future activities – the study of fuel-containing materials and their placement inside of the OS, the study of radioactive water, radiation and nuclear control, stabilization of unstable construction, the future dismantling of unstable construction and removal of FCM and others.
Serhii Kupriianchuk, a junior researcher of the ISP NPP, spoke about the radioactive waste in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, how it was disposed of, the main spot of disposal, and how radwaste are controlled today. Also was presented information on the existing infrastructure for radwaste management and storage in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone.
After the lecture, the students were asked many questions about the consequences, liquidation of the Chernobyl accident, research, and the future of the Shelter object. During the discussion, the scientists provided answers and exciting facts to these and other questions.
We hope that the scientists of the ISP NPP in the “Scientific Meetings” helped bring the public information about scientific research and its results during the study of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and at the Shelter object.
