International Scientific and Practical Workshop “Chornobyl Experience as a Solution of the Problems in Mitigating Fukushima 1 Accident”

   The 4th International Scientific and Practical Workshop “Chornobyl Experience as a Solution of the Problems in Mitigating Fukushima 1 Accident” was held in the Institute for Safety Problems of NPPs of NAS of Ukraine on May 6-8, 2019.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

           The Workshop was held at the initiative and with financial assistance of NATO under the program “Science for Peace and Security”. The organizers of the Workshop were the Institute for Safety Problems of NPP and Institute of Engineering Thermophysics with the participation of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management and the State Specialized Enterprise “Chornobyl NPP”.

      The aim of the Workshop was the involvement of wide range of scientists from different scientific branches into the constructive discussion of scientific and technical problems of severe nuclear accidents consequences such as Chornobyl NPP and Fukushima.

   More than 30 representatives of scientific institutions and organizations participated in the Workshop including representatives from Japan, Germany, the USA. Overall 18 reports were presented at the Workshop. Specialists and scientists from the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, the ISP NPP of NAS of Ukraine, Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of NAS of Ukraine, JSC “Kyiv Research and Design Institute “Energoproject””, the SE “State Research Institute of Building Constructions”, the SSE “Chornobyl NPP”, the Sate Scientific and technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety, Joint Support Office of the EC for Support to Management of the EU`s Instrument for Nuclear Safety Cooperation in Ukraine participated in the Workshop from Ukraine.

 

 

      Opening ceremony of the Workshop was held on May 6. Anatolii Nosovskyi, Director of the ISP NPP, corr. member of NAS of Ukraine, prof., and Viktor Krasnov, Head of the Organizing Committee, made welcoming speeches. Reports of specialists from Japan, Germany, Ukraine and the USA as well as Volodymyr Borysenko and Oleksandr Kalynovskyi, scientists from the ISP NPP, were presented.

   Participants of the Workshop visited Exclusion Zone, Pryp`iat and Chornobyl on May 7. They attended industrial site of ChNPP, New Safe Confinement and Units of ChNPP.

Range of reports were made by specialists from Japan and Ukraine on May 8. Kostiantyn Cherevko, employee of the ISP NPP, made a report about joint projects of Ukraine and NATO, which are currently under way.

Participants of the Workshop made a conclusion that implementation of the joint projects of Ukraine and NATO was successful.

   According to the results of reports, participants of the Workshop recognized the necessity to continue the strengthening of international cooperation on issues of nuclear hazardous facilities safety such as Chornobyl and Fukushima. They also recommended to conduct the Workshop on an ongoing basis.
