The 32 Anniversary of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant Accident

Порошенко       On April 26, commemorative events took place on the Chornobyl NPP site dedicated to the 32nd anniversary of the Chornobyl accident caused by the fourth power unit’s failure. This event was attended by the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, who visited the Storage for Spent Nuclear Fuel from Chornobyl reactors, took part in a rally in memory, then laid the flowers on monument to Heroes of Chornobyl and handed state awards to the liquidators of the accident – employees of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, and also held meeting on Chernobyl issues. The meeting was also attended by: Minister of Social Policy of Ukraine Andriy Reva, Head of the Kyiv Regional State Administration Oleksandr Gorgan, Head of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management Vitaliy Petruk, NNEGC “Energoatom” President Yuri Nedashkovsky, Director of the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Anatolii Nosovskyi, heads and specialists from the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone’s enterprises and the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine.

    After speeches of speakers Petro Poroshenko noticed significant progress in overcoming the Chornobyl accident’s consequences, that allows, by the end of this year, putting into operation the Spent Fuel Storage Facility and Radioactive Waste Processing Plant. That by-turn will allow planned decommissioning activities at the Chornobyl NPP. All concerning the commissioning of the New Safe Confinement scheduled for December of this year, the President of Ukraine emphasized the necessity in performing activities on the dismantling of unstable constructions of the Shelter object and urged scientists and engineers to develop technical decisions on extraction of nuclear materials from the Shelter.
