Visit to Fukushima

   During May 10-16, 2018 a visit of the Ukrainian delegation to the Institute of Environmental Radioactivity (Fukushima, Japan) was held. The delegation was headed by Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine Ostap Semerak and it includes Head of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management Vitalii Petruk, Head of the Subcommittee on State Monitoring of the Environment of the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Environmental Policy, Nature Resources Utilization and Elimination of the Consequences of Chornobyl Catastrophe Ivan Rybak, a number of Ukrainian scientists and representatives of public administration. From the Institute for Safety Problems of the Nuclear Power Plants of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine the head of the Department of radiation ecology Dr. Mykola Talerko took part as a member of the delegation. The visit program included participation in the International Symposium “Comparative analyses of environmental radioactivity issues and post-accidental management of the areas at ChNPP and Fukushima Daiichi NPP”, where Dr. Talerko made the presentation “Atmospheric contamination of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone: monitoring data and modeling results”.

   The meeting of working groups on the implementation of the joint Ukrainian-Japanese project “Improvement of radiation control of the environment and legislative bases in Ukraine for environmental rehabilitation of radioactive contaminated territories” within the SATREPS program was organized. As a result of the meeting of the WG3 working group, the results of the first year of the project were summed up and the work plan for the next year was formed. A meeting with scientists of the Fukushima Medical University was organized for the Ukrainian delegation, as well as visits to the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant and to the area of construction of a new dike dam in the territories affected by the tsunami in 2011.
