General meeting of the department of physical and technical problems of power engineering, NAS of Ukraine
On April 25, the general meeting of the Department of Physical and Technical Problems of Power Engineering of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was held.
The meeting was opened by Academician-Secretary of the Department, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine Oleksandr Kyrylenko, who made a report “On the results of the scientific activities of the institutions of the Department of Physical and Technical Problems of Power Engineering of the NAS of Ukraine in 2022 and prospects for the development of research and development in the field of energy.”
After the discussion of Academician Kyrylenko’s report, other scientific reports were presented on the most important results of fundamental and applied research of the Department’s institutions.
The director of the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants, Academician Anatolii Nosovskyi, acting Deputy Director on Research, PhD. in Tech. Sc. Valerii Derenhovskyi, Head of the Department of Atomic Energy, Dr. in Tech. Sc. Volodymyr Borysenko and the head of the sector of physical and chemical methods of analysis, PhD in Tech. Sc. Oleksii Odintsov. Valerii Derengovskyi presented a scientific report on the topic “Results of activities on the transformation of the Shelter object into an ecologically safe system”, in which a comprehensive analysis of potential scenarios of the transformation of the Shelter object into an ecologically safe system after the commissioning of the New Safe Confinement was made. The performed analysis made it possible to choose the most realistic strategy for the step-by-step removal or transfer to a controlled state of fuel-containing materials, their further handling and accompanying radioactive waste, as well as the transformation of the Shelter object in the process of its transformation into an ecologically safe system, and to determine its final state. The results of the work can be used to update the current Shelter object transformation strategy, as well as in the planning and practical implementation of activities related to the extraction of fuel-containing materials from the Shelter object and the transformation of this object into a near-surface repository for radioactive waste .
