Commemoration in Celebration of Completion of Works on New Safe Confinement Construction
Certificate of completion of New Safe Confinement (NSC) was signed on July 10, 2019. Putting into operation the NSC showed successful implementation of a large-scale project – completion of construction of unique technological structure that doesn’t have analogues in the world. The structure protects mankind reliably against impact of destroyed 4th unit of Chornobyl NPP. For the implementation of the project financial forces of 28 world countries were consolidated, the best engineering and technical decisions were conscripted, almost 500 companies and organizations from Ukraine and other countries participated in the project.
The Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants of the NAS of Ukraine was a key participant in implementation of the NSC project. Scientists of the Institute conducted great amount of preproject and project researches, based on which measures concerning radiation safety of the personnel and minimization of the radiation impact on the environment were developed. In particular, study of radiation state in places of building and assembly works and on the ways of access to them as well as inspection of technical state of technological systems and facilities, which are in the work area and to be dismantled or need reconstruction was conducted. Parts of the project on construction organization in section of radiation protection of personnel, environmental control, labor protection and radioactive waste management were developed. Separate engineering solutions were substantiated and radiation safety assessment while construction and further operation both in normal conditions and in case of potential accidents was made. Works on designer`s supervision during project realization were provided.
Commemoration in celebration of completion of works on the NSC construction was held on August 6, 2019 at Chornobyl NPP. Participants of the event visited observation point of the Shelter object, technological building, central control room and under arch space of the NSC. Vitalii Petruk, the Head of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, and Serhii Kalashnyk, acting Director General of the SSE “Chornobyl NPP”, handed to Anatolii Nosovskyi Certificate of Gratitude for the staff of the Institute for weighty contribution to the Shelter object transformation into an ecologically safe system and in connection with completion of project on the NSC construction. Anatolii Nosovskyi, Director of the ISP NPP, congratulated the staff of the SSE “Chornobyl NPP” and participants of the event on completion of another important stage in the Shelter object transformation into an ecologically safe system and expressed his hope for successful execution of works which are needed to be done in the future.
Anatolii Nosovskyi, Director of the Institute, corr. member of the NAS of Ukraine, Volodymyr Shcherbin, Deputy Director for Science, and Yevheniia Kudin, Director Assistant, participated in the event as representatives of the ISP NPP of the NAS of Ukraine.
