Workshop on decommissioning

     On October 24, 2017 at the Kyiv office of  the ISP NPP NAS of Ukraine there was held a workshop with the expert of the European Commission on the decommissioning of nuclear power plants and radiation-hazardous objects – Paloma Diaz Arokas.

     That was the third meeting conducted this year within the framework of cooperation between the Directorate General of the European Commission for Research and Innovation and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The head of Decommissioning Department of the ISP NPP, Ph.D. – Sizov A.O. war appointed as coordinator of the meetings from the NAS of Ukraine. Workshops were held with the aim of finding and defining possible directions of scientific research for potential participating in international projects concerning cooperation in the area of ​​decommissioning.

    The meeting was devoted to the interaction of scientists of Ukraine and the European Union in the field of study of problems of decommissioning of nuclear power facilities in search of possible partners for joint works financed by the EU. In addition to the representatives of the Institute, a representative of the National Science Center “Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology”.

   Paloma Dias Arokas presented her report on the announcement of a new Competitive Grants within supporting of EU research on decommissioning nuclear facilities. She presented directions and topics of possible research in this field.

    Representatives of ISP NPP and NSC “KhIPT” presented their reports concerning possible research directions for financing within the framework of the announced competition.

    The following issues for cooperation were considered:

  • Irradiated graphite handling at the ChNPP;
  • Scientific and technical support for the decommissioning of ChNPP;
  • Development of a software complex for the development of optimal scenarios for dismantling of NPP constructions and equipment at the stage of decommissioning;
  • Development of technologies for reclamation and remediation of the radioactive contaminated territories during the decommissioning of NPP on the model example of the contaminated areas of the ChNPP Cooling Pond;
  • 3D modelling for extracting nuclear materials from the destroyed ChNPP Unit;
  • Research in the field of nuclear and radiation safety.

    After presentations, the EU expert expressed her critical remarks and suggested ways for further improvement those topics to continue work with the participation of EU partners.
